P.E. in Ancient Rome

During this time period (500 B.C.) physical activity was also regarded with importance. Their role with P.E. was different than Greece. Power and being fit was key for Romes military success. Males recieved training for the military by participating in activities like archery, riding, wrestling, and fencing. Strength training was important so males were able to protect the state. This is why Rome was so strong and had a lot of power. Rome eventually conquered Greece. I got this information from the same book as my other post on here.

  1. Price, I am learning about Rome right now in my History of Sport class. I find it very fascinating that the Romans trained the way they did to be a powerful city. If every American man trained the way the Romans did, they would not be as much Obesity in the U.S.A. today. I was a wrestler in High School and that sport requires being fit. Very nice post.

  2. Wasn't it required for Greek men to compete in the old Olympics. They very much held the sports (or any competitive physical activity) in high regard. Quite interesting how many Summer Olympic games and competitions are generally all rooted from olden Athens games.

  3. This also applies to my theory about how things change with technology and the time period. Since technology wasn’t so great here, the ancients relied more on brute force and physical training. Where as today, brute forces is not the case in today most elite special forces. It actually requires more mental compatibles than strength. And technology plays a big part of that because they did not have the arsenal of weapons we have today in the ancient times.

  4. Price, I found this post to be very interesting. During the period 500 B.C being in physical shape was not an option, but a requirement for survival of the Roman society. Yet again as we are all aware, the Americans have evolved into a lazy and unactive society. Being fit is not a requirement for this society inorder to survive. Today's technology has provided Americans with options that are not necessarily in our best interest. Technolgy has been an enabler and perpetuator of ever increasing laziness of Americans.

  5. It makes pratical sense why the romans were so well trained and healthy. People nowadays surround themselves with "excerise" equipment that they never use and expect the machine to lose the weight for them. In Roman period they didn't have all this surround technology, they had what they could make or use in the natural environment.
