Text books of the future!
With the price of books slowly increasing a good alternative could be to have all of the books transferred to a small file and could be accessed through wireless devices, Computers, lap tops and other devices. Colleges could have codes for all of the books on file and they would still be able to sell the code. By converting them to a computer file they will be able to save money on packaging, shipments, and having to spend money on new editions. The books could be updated or changes through software that the book companies will have. This would save schools and students alike.

Rik, I think that this is a very good idea. But unfortunately we live in a capatalistic society. It's all about profit. Yes the price of school books are outrageous, but guess what inorder to ontinue our education we have to purchase these books. And why sell the book back to the college, because you hardly receive any moey back. I have all my college books that I purhased from BCCC, because to me I prefer to keep my books than to sell them back for nothing.
ReplyDeleteI think textbooks online are a great idea, colleges could charge a good amount of money to rent them online. The book could be online and as soon as the term is over the book become inactive. It would save paper and it would allow the college to earn more.
ReplyDeleteI hate paying 90 dollars for a text book ...it makes me angry!
As much as I love this idea, i can imagine this further would greatly devastate our schools already dwindling funds (via. Corbett's new budget fixing). Regardless, I've already seen people walking around Newtown campus with the new Kindles and hand-held pocket book readers, and it genuinely seems to make reading and studying much more convenient, without having to worry about worn, ripped, or missing pages.
ReplyDeleteI simply can not wait for paper back books to be obsolete… Devices are already supporting the technology such as the Ipad and e readers. It is much easier to carry an unlimited supply of books on a digital device rather than a bunch of books. It makes living much easier and functional and it would be a great investment for anyone to invest in making this happen. Also, you can use that handy C+F feature to find what you’re looking for in the book rather than rummaging through the table of contents. It might make life more lazy, but in truth, it is evolution.
ReplyDeleteI like this concept of the e- reader replacing textbooks. Personally I was going to get one this year, but many books are still not on file. This will change the way colleges teach. They are going to have to adapt to the technology. Certainly many people will be affected by these devices in college. The bookstore will no longer have any purpose but to sell real books to read.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping that future generations will have this opportunity of having all their textbooks on one device. Both my children had to carry 15-20 lb backpacks, and school schedules give little time between time periods to switch books, so they ended up carrying most of the weight all day long. It's no wonder that kids' postures are horrible.
ReplyDeleteMy ex had a company that worked on transferring texts from book form to available on Kindle and Nook devices. I think this is a great idea. I love books, but physically carrying many texts books is bad for one's back. This is a great article and I am glad you chose to focus on it. I wonder how many less people would have back problems if they were not forced to carry an enormously heavy back pack for seventeen years of their life!
ReplyDeleteCoursesmart.com offers electronic textbooks online at half the price. This is the future school and I just missed out on it. Costs should go down and the wait in the line will no longer be a part of the college experience. You will no longer have to go after a used copy to save some money, but , you will also not be able to follow the previous users highlighted material. This will not take long to come into effect and I can see it being integrated into the next version of BBVista.
