P.E. in Ancient Greece
One influence on P.E. was the civilization of Ancient Greece. (338 B.C.) Athens placed high value on physical activity. Sports, exercise, and fitness as integral to education and life. The Greek stressed the unity of the mind and body and soul. Males physical activities were wrestling, running, and jumping. Development of the body was valued, and the Greeks engaged in training to develop their physiques. In honer of the Gods, Greeks held festivals, where sporting events gave Greek men the opportunity to demostrate the beauty of their physique as well as their athlectic abilities. The main festival was the Olympic Games. This was held every 4 years and featured music, feasting, and contest. I got this in formation from the book called P.E. Exercise Science And Sport by Deborah A. West and Charles A. Bucher

P.E. in the Civil War Time Period (1900)
Many leaders had an impact on physical education at this time period. P.E at this time started to grow in schools all over. In 1860 a man named Dioclesian Lewis created a system called "light" gymnastics. Men, women, and children got involved in his gymnastics. Lewis's goal was to improve everybodys health and well being. It was exercise to improve a persons cardiovascular system. In 1861 Lewis established the Normal Institute for P.E. in Boston to prepare teachers to teach his system in schools. Other things that Lewis taught future teachers was anatomy, physiology, hygiene, and gymnastics. It was a 10 week preparation program for teachers. This was the first teacher training program in the United States. This is a look at P.E. in the Civil War era. I got my information from the book called Foundations of P.E.. Exercise Science, And Sport. The authors of the book is Deborah A. Wuest and Charles A. Bucher

P.E. in the past
The past activities in P.E. were based on the culture of that time period. It was not based on today's P.E. staying active, watching what a person eats and leadership. Past education did not have the technology that there is today. For example, past P.E. did not have the technology to look up information on what was healthy to eat and what was not healthy to eat. Past P.E. didn't have the knowledge we have today. In the past P.E. was required in school. Now, many schools are dropping P.E. to save money. Also, with more technology the healthier people became and the more aware people became of physical activity. I got this information from the book: Health The Basics, The author of the book is Rebecca J. Donatelle
