In our society of the present kids are not eating properly as you can see in this picture and kids are not exercising enough to lead a healthy live. With P.E. being in schools of today gym class can help reduce the number of kids that are obese and overweight by teaching them what is proper to eat and why we all should exercise everyday. Once a teacher explains the consequences of no exercise and a poor diet students will change their habits. All a P.E. teacher of today needs to do is touch the lives of every kid one by one to stop the obesity rate from climbing in our society of today!

  1. Yeah sure McDonalds is yummy, but that is no excuse for P.E. to no be stressed in school. You would think it would be different, the heavier our generation the more physical activity they would add in to our education program. But that would never happen.

  2. I think we also need more celebrities getting on the bandwagon of getting kids to be more active and eat healthier. Programs with players of the NFL and the "Got Milk?" ads are prime examples of role models using their talents the way they should.

  3. I agree that this problem needs to be addressed and solved (or at least an impact is made upon it) or there is going to be a serious diabetes epidemic in this country and a much lower quality of health in America.

  4. Well one of of the big issues may be at home. Some parents may be obese themselves and feed their kids the same diet they eat or their parents may be of normal weight but feed their kids without supervision-P.Maldonado

  5. I would agree that together with education and adult influence we should be able to change the eating habits of young children. However, I feel that proper nutrition is something that should start at home (same for respect, attitude adjustment (and that is the politely correct for the word punishment) and acceptable social skills). Obesity could be a direct link that both parents are working and that it is very easy for children to "pop it into the microwave", as compared to home cooked meals, or just pick something up with the $10 some parents shell out.

  6. I completely agree. Obesity is a huge problem that needs to get resolved. Parents need to find time out of their busy schedule to make a home cooked healthy meal. There isnt any problem with having a treat once in a while but consistently stopping at fast food places isnt the healthy choice. Kids are going to have more health problems, not being active and not eating healthy.

  7. I not only believe just P.E teachers need to be involve into just the students physical education. I also think that teachers part of the school system need to play an active role. Students must see that their other teachers are concern with physical activity. They need to teach and inspire students to achieve goals.

  8. Price, I agree with your post. Childhood obesity is a huge problem and it definitely needs to be addressed. I think there needs to be P.E. in every school and teachers should push children to eat healthier and exercise more. Parents also need to be better role models for their children and help their children watch what they eat. Also parents need to make their children ride bikes and things like that instead of spending all their time in front of the television. Good post. Mary Ann Reday.

  9. I work at a school, we have gym class for 30 mins. 4 times a week. Many of these kids are very out of shape. They complain that they have to participate. Our school lunches have become healthier. A nutritionist was just hired this year to run the cafeteria. Everything on the menu has changed. No more iced teas just milk or juice.

  10. The Nfl actually took notice to this a few years ago and sponsors a program called Play60, encouraging kids to play run and excersise for at least 60 minutes each day. Parents should not allow there children to eat such junk.

  11. I think it is very important for families to have nutritional meals together. With everyone's busy schedules, too many meals consist of fast food places or quick frozen meals popped into the microwave. What kid wouldn't want chicken nuggets over broccoli and carrots? Children are not eating enough fruits and vegetables. Parents should also monitor the amount of time their child spends playing video games, this time should be spent outdoors playing and interacting with other children.

  12. I put this picture and information up because I believe that it is important for kids to exercise everyday. With obesity rising among children I feel that if they are taught how to eat healthy and exercise everyday then the obesity rate would decline. It starts with the schools.

  14. i agree that PE teachers should tell kids what to eat and how to start their lives on the right foot. the world is becoming so fat because no on is tell children and adults what to do. if pe teachers step in and give just little ideas to the kid it will stop most of the problem. also more and more companies are getting on board in helping out over weight kids like the NFL and MLB with sports programs.

  15. This picture is actually disturbing. I AM NOT AGAINST JUNK FOOD BUT!!!! it needs to be controlled. If a kid does good on a test, or if it's like some tradition to eat junk once a week, okay... But this is too much!! I actually did a speech on this subject and used the same picture and people were shocked! PE should be mandatory from pre-k through college even! It is so important for a child to have the right balanced diet and nutrition, and because they don't know any better, and the parents obviously don't either, just look at these kids!

  16. I get so mad when parents let their child eat whatever they want, but when they get older and start having weight problems, they want to be on tv crying. Put your foot down and tell them NO, simple as that. Weight is only a big problem if you let it be. Eat what's right for your body and exercise.

  17. i See this every day with my little brother, he doesnt eat the right things nor does he even eat things that have any nutritional value, its all processed or quick meals. He use to be thin and athletic but now he just keeps gaining weight. But the 8 hours of C.O.D. doesnt help either. Just getting kids to eat some healthy things and forcing them if you have to to go outside and run around is all it takes.

  18. Good post, Price.
Look at That kid in the picture, I feel so bad about it. I will not agree what Price said that "All a P.E. teacher of today needs to do is touch the lives of every kid one by one to stop the obesity rate from climbing in our society of today!". maybe all P.E teachers has a little responsibility to keep children active in school.
Actually parents have the most responsibility to lead their kids eating healthy and having more excersise. and tell kids why we need to eat fish, chiken, sea food, vegies and fruits etc.. when we get thirsty we should drink water instead of soda or juice. they will understand. parents can help their kids developing a healthy eating habit and help them aware of food portion.

  19. The problem with P.E teachers and kids being over weight is that, the instructors really don’t care of the health of the students. They just care about their pay check and that’s what is wrong with society. It’s rare that people help each other just for the sake of helping without anything in return. I don’t think this falls on the P.E. teachers, but on the parents who should be teaching their children control.

  20. Obesity is a serious problem in the United States. Children are learing from those around them, which include poor dieting habits. These habits are causing long term health issues which include heart disease, high levels of cholesterol, organ malfunctions, even death. We as a people need to be concerned for the overall being of our youth. P.E. can help reduce these risks.

  21. The obesity Americans, especially children, is awful! When ill people realize the importance health plays in achieving and leading a happy life. Healthy lifestyle choices need to be encouraged.

The New York TImes had an article about this in Sunday's edition. The topic was of an elementary/ middle school principal's stance against unhealthy snacks being purchased from the neighboring bodega, before the morning classes. Parents were picketing in front, telling the students to eat the free breakfast provided by the school, instead. This is an interesting start towards promoting healthier choices, however the meals being fed students in schools need a healthy overhaul. Maybe this is where the principal should be focusing her efforts, in regards to student meals.

  22. I am a Physical Education major and I agree with everything you posted here. American needs to strengthen its Physical Education in schools because obesity is a problem in the United States. Schools need to work on cutting out junk food in the school cafeteria as well. If students ate less junk food such as sugared cereal for breakfast, the would also have less interest in eating junk lunch food.

  23. Price, a picture is worth a thousand words. As we can see our children our eating unhealthy foods that are causing them to blow up. I agree with everyone that our children need to be more healthy and that the parents and the school system should advocate for physical education in the schools.
